Rabbinical Assembly Congratulates Justice Sotomayor

Below is a letter that the Rabbinical Assembly sent this afternoon to Justice Sonia Sotomayor in honor of her confirmation as Supreme Court Justice

Dear Justice Sotomayor:

On behalf of the 1600 rabbis who serve 1.5 million Conservative Jews in synagogues and Jewish institutions in the United States and around the world and for ourselves, it is our great pleasure to congratulate you on your recent confirmation to the bench of the U.S. Supreme Court. Your accomplishments in life, especially as a lawyer and a judge have guided you to this historic achievement. Your personal devotion to the principles of Justice and fairness distinguish you and give us great satisfaction because they flow from our Hebrew Bible. A society based on the foundation of Law is the bedrock of our Nation because those who founded it were grounded in the principles of our bible which continue to anchor Western civilization and were the basis for the ideals of our Constitution.

In addition, we salute you because your family history and background parallels the immigrant experience of more than 2 million of our people who left Europe and came to this blessed land, finding here a haven from poverty and persecution as well as extraordinary acceptance and opportunity. We are certain that your appreciation for the challenges as well as the benefits which America provides will inform your understanding and interpretations of the Constitution.

May you be blessed with health, vigor, insight, patience and the ability to help our Nation to grow and to develop as an exemplar in the creation of a just, responsible and compassionate world.

Sincerely yours,

Rabbi Jeffrey A. Wohlberg Rabbi Julie Schonfeld
President Executive Vice President
