Action Alert: Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act

FROM THE ADL:

ACTION ALERT: CONTACT YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES – IRAN REFINED PETROLEUM SANCTIONS ACT

The recent deprivation of human rights in Iran accompanying the recent re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the brutal repression of protestors challenging the election results has increased resolve in Congress to provide the United States with a full arsenal of economic and political tools to press Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

The Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act (H.R. 2194 in the House and S. 908 in the Senate) would sanction companies providing refined petroleum to Iran or helping Iran expand its own refining capacity, strengthening US diplomatic efforts by adding another lever for action should Iran continue to reject US overtures. It is imperative at this critical time in history that Congress give the Administration the full array of tough sanctions and penalties to impose if Iran continues to reject the demands of the international community, and continues its development of nuclear weapons.

While Senator Lieberman and Congressmen Larson, DeLauro, Courtney and Himes have signed onto the bills as co-sponsors, Senator Dodd and Congressman Murphy have not yet done so.

We urge you to please contact Senator Dodd and ask him to sign on to S. 908 as a co-sponsor and for those of you who live in Congressman Murphy’s district, to contact him and ask him to sign on to H.R. 2194 as a co-sponsor. In addition, it is equally important to contact Senator Lieberman and Congressmen Larson, DeLauro, Courtney and Himes to thank them for their support and leadership on this issue.
